Inappropriate resources for schools and settings: notice from the Education Safeguarding Team

The Education Safeguarding Team have recently been contacted by another Local Authority who has issued a warning to schools relating to inappropriate resources being sent by independent companies, apparently free of charge, for use in PSHE lessons.

Although seemingly harmless, these resources could potentially be damaging to young people due to the nature of the content and imagery.   In addition, they provide links to gaming sites, with the intention that pupils then make purchases through them, thereby generating income for the independent company.

Please could we remind schools to adequately research any resources sent by independent and/or commercial companies, to ensure there are no hidden messages or advertising, and that they are fit for the purpose they are intended.

Hi – are we able to know the company involved as it is possible that any school staff could send for these without DSL knowledge.. if we knew who they were we could better warn staff?
    Thank you

Hello Clare, I am afraid that we are not naming the specific resources as this could generate additional views to the content in question. We would recommend that DSLs ensure that staff undertake appropriate checks regarding the suitability of content (this should include considering the specific nature of the content itself as well as any associated advertising) before using materials in the classroom with children.
