Kent Community Network and Websense

Kent County Council is working to ensure that the recommendations in the recently published national e-safety strategy are implemented across Kent schools.

Kent schools that are connected to The Kent Community Network are provided with broadband Internet, including a sophisticated filtering service called Websense.

Websense have a team categorising websites for suitability, and preventing access to inappropriate sites on a global basis. Currently there are 90 different categories available for categorising a website.

Primary schools follow the pre-determined default setting of blocked categories however Secondary Schools can also apply their own blocking policies in addition to the central blocked lists, enabling them to amend the categories according to their needs.

By using a filtering system such as Websense, Schools are able to block inappropriate sites by allocating them into pre-defined categories and limit the possible risks associated with children using the Internet.
