Internet safety lesson plans for KS2 & 3

Kidsmart have developed lesson plans and accompanying resources to help teach KS2 & 3 students about Internet safety.

There are 5 lesson resources on internet safety which you can use in the classroom. Some are simple, for example the ‘Have Fun Communicating’ exercise, while others will take more time and involve you using or ordering other resources from this website. Kidsmart are constantly revising and improving these resources following  feedback, so if you do download them they would really like to hear about your experience using them.

Interactive Quiz (KS2) – This is an excellent tool to introduce the internet to KS2 students or even younger pupils. It illustrates some of the positive ways that the internet can be used and also contains a safety quiz which is hidden within a simulated chatroom.

Can you help a Friend? (KS2 & 3) – This classroom activity asks pupils to imagine that they are Jessica a friend of Tiffany Walker. Tiffany has moved with her Dad to another part of the country and has started to make contact with someone called Leon in a chatroom. Tiffany emails Jessica and asks for advice. This simple work sheet will help pupils think through what advice they should give to Tiffany about being careful and not meeting up with Leon.

Have Fun Communicating (KS2) – This classroom activity looks at codes, symbols, and shortcuts we use when online. It also contains a word search. Children will love showing you emoticon icons and symbols they use in chatrooms and text messages but it will also give you the opportunity to discuss how to reproduce the SMART rules in ways that are relevant for young people. You don’t need a computer to run this activity.

Making the most of the Net  (KS2 & 3) – This classroom activity involves pupils looking at a number of websites which have won awards through the C&W Childnet Academy programme. The questions are designed to encourage pupils to use their searching and navigaitng skills on the net. The content of these websites will inspire pupils to think about how they can create really good websites which make a difference to other young people on subjects such as animations, writing advice and the environment.

A stanger in the house (KS2) – This classroom activity will involve you ordering the drama script from Childnet (free of charge to schools in the UK). You can read it, or perform it in the classroom and then go through the questions that it raises with the pupils in another session.

Dont’ Just Stare The Don’t Just Stare guide assists teachers as they support young people in creating websites. The activities contained within the guide are designed to encourage pupils to PREPARE: develop ideas, research information, generate content; DARE: consider and evaluate components of a website; and SHARE: learn how to present and share knowledge through designing and constructing their own online project. The content of these activities will motivate pupils to design and create their own website whilst learning how be safe and keep SMART online.
